The Duty and Destiny Series By Andrew Wareham, the author of the highly acclaimed, 'A Poor Man at the Gate Series.' Please Note The novels are best read in series order.
First published in July 2014, The Duty and Destiny Series is a superbly-crafted family saga with a strong naval/seafaring theme. Set in the period of the French Revolutionary War (1793 – 1802). The series follows the naval career, loves and business dealings of Englishman, Frederick Harris, the son of a Hampshire landowner. He is a brave but reluctant mariner. Despite his disinclination, he is seemingly destined to become a Master and Commander of his own ship.
Book Two – The Bitter Land..
Frederick returns to England where he faces some months of half-pay on land – there are always more officers than ships. He marries his sweetheart and settles to a quiet life, he hopes; after a few months he is selected for a dangerous but potentially rich mission, picked out because he now has a reputation as a risk-taker. But unforeseen complications may destroy his career...Expecting several years on shore he buys an old-fashioned estate and appears to be settled again when tragedy strikes and he is able to use his influence to take a command sailing ‘far foreign.’

As a big fan of the Master and Commander series, all of which I have read; I was going through withdrawal for lack of a better term. The Horatio Hornblower series was next; many of which I have read. This series is equal to the others and in some ways superior. Similarly the protagonist is a lucky and skilled Captain as well as flawed; particularly in regard to his dealings on land. This book has a naval adventure and then delves into the land-based dealings for the majority of the book. It does this quite well and much more interestingly than OBrien dealt with his Aubrey on land which was always a disaster.
The book is very well written in perhaps a bit more of a style one would expect of the time; but not overly wordy. I quite enjoy Warehams writing.
I highly recommend this book and series.

The Bitter Land The Duty and Destiny Series Book 2 edition by Andrew Wareham Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
I would give it a 4.5 if allowed. It is comparable to Hornblower and Bernard Cromwell's Master and commander series. Good action writing with enough historical background to let the reader know the author has done his homework.
Good description of 18-early 19th century naval warfare, author has done his homework, and displays great amounts of historical knowledge, including political and agricultural history, I am impressed. Also, besides having proofread the books before publishing, the plot is good, people seem real, and there are no dull moments. Great book.
Wareham is no Patrick O'Brien, though he writes a tight tale. His hero is certainly no Jack Aubrey, though probably much truer to the men of the time.
The first book in this series was full of swashbuckling action and improbable successes. In the second he deals with life ashore, all told from the point of view of the victor, little comfort to the peasants.
I have hesitated between 3 and 4 stars. As a dedicated O'Brien follower -- I have read the series through twice -- I cannot unequivocally applaud this series, but I expect I still read them all.
Very interesting portrayal of the realities of agrarian life in England at the turn of the 19th century. Very good story even though I have not read the first volume of this series--you can jump right in with this second volume. Wonder why the name of ships is not italicized as per usual practice?
Very different picture of the times than that provided by O'Brien, but that is not bad. I enjoyed the book and the picture of the society in England and the British Navy at the end of the 1800's, good read.
The second book in the series, and reading this one made me anxious to read the remaining novels. Wareham starts to bring to life the supporting characters, and well drawn characters they are. This book spends a fair bit of time on land, with details around the agrarian revolution taking place in England at that time, with its resultant social upheaval. Fascinating read.
I liked another book in this series well enough that I bought this one. It was Ok, but I did not get as much out of it, possibly becasue it was mostly not about life at sea and naval combat of the time.
Well written, with a lot of jargon from the period that is tough to follow at times. i wish I could give it a better review but I just did not enjoy it enough for it to earn another star from me.
